mangle (Voz caribe o arahuaca). m. Arbusto de la familia de las Rizoforáceas, de tres a cuatro metros de altura, cuyas ramas, largas y extendidas, dan unos vástagos que descienden hasta tocar el suelo y arraigar en él, con hojas pecioladas, opuestas, enteras, elípticas, obtusas y gruesas, flores axilares de cuatro pétalos amarillentos, fruto seco de corteza coriácea, pequeño y casi redondo, y muchas raíces aéreas en parte. Es propio de los países tropicales, y las hojas, frutos y corteza se emplean en las tenerías.
mangle blanco. m. Árbol americano de la familia de las Verbenáceas, muy corpulento, con hojas semejantes a las del peral, pero más gruesas, más largas y más agudas. Echa renuevos como el anterior y tiene por fruto una caja prolongada llena de pulpa algo amarga, pero comestible.
